Guerrilla Eats is back with a boost of booze & beats!

Guerrilla Eats is ready to provide the great people of Manchester with local street food, craft beers and punches as well as music to dance the night away to this weekend.

The scamps will be setting up this Saturday (23rd Feb) at 60 New Bailey Street, Salford M3 5FS (right next to Salford Central railway station) from 6pm ‘till late.

Learning from the first event, this gathering will be indoors so no wet feet for the revellers – just pure passion for food with nothing to get in the way. The addition of booze and music will no doubt go down a treat and everyone is ready for an evening of great food and atmosphere!

Taking inspiration from the eponymous Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Guerrilla Eats is bringing a new concept in the North West – a street food night market; pairing street food, craft drinks and excellent music. All in all, a celebration of all that’s good for your tongues, tummies and your ears!

Mal O’Conner, of Guerrilla Eats, said: “Sitting down with friends, we noticed there wasn’t a night that catered to our needs of independent, low-cost food with craft drinks AND good music – so we decided to put something on that suited us – and that’s how the Gorilla came up with Guerrilla Eats.”

So, you’re wondering what’s going to be on offer… frankly, far too much for my mind to deal with – how will I ever make a decision about what to eat?! There’s definitely plenty of delicious grub available to suit all tastes and dietary needs from the likes of Fire and Salt BBQ co for some deep south BBQ comfort food to Chaat Cart which dishes up delicious vegetarian dosas and southern Indian fare or you can take a trip to the streets of Mexico with Margo & Rita’s burritos.

There’s pizzas fromStreatza, gourmet hot dogs from Dirty Dogs, quality burgers from Bistro Barn House and some yummy sweet treats from Ginger’s Comfort Emporium and Pancake Corner. So come on, don’t even try to tell me that your mouth isn’t watering at the thought!

All of this along with with craft beers from independent brewers and music from some of the North’s biggest up and coming DJs and you’ve got the makings of a banging Saturday night right there!

Luck, Lust, Liquor & Burn: Reviewed

Manchester’s newest taco joint, Luck, Lust, Liquor & Burn, inspired by a road trip from Vegas to Mexico, is blowing the minds of those lucky, lusty (and smart) enough to have paid it a visit already.

Formally known as Socio Rehab, the guys behind Home Sweet Home, Almost Famous and Keko Moku have brought us another glorious hangout over two floors!

It’s not just ‘Almost Famous with Mexican food’. It’s a completely different vibe to Famous, not better or worse but different, more ‘grown up’ shall we say? Less slut, more class and unmistakably ‘cool’.

The menu is large and varied, providing meaty, veggie and fishy options. Accompanied by the delightful Sarah Nosh, we started off with the guacamole which is hand-smashed at your table for uber-freshness meaning you get the full hit of the lime, chilli and coriander complimenting the avocado. Alongside this we ordered the warm artichoke, jalapeno and cheese dip which also comes with nachos and was extremely moreish and something I’d never had before so I was pleasantly surprised.

However, for the calorie conscious you can indulge in carb-free goodness too such as the chicken lettuce cups. Chicken, pineapple, peanuts and sunflower seeds drizzed with a teriyaki BBQ sauce and served in a gem lettuce leaf. VERY good.

On to the tacos, burritos and sticky buns (now you’re listening?!), well, they are quite something. We ordered the Beef Smackdown burrito which was delicious but a bit heavy for me (the portion sizes are substantial). The slow-cooked beef with chipotle gravy, peppers, onions, hot sauce and cheese is spicy and comforting and it sure as hell gives you bang for your buck.

We also tried the Yum Yum sticky pork buns. The mini brioche buns are very sweet, too sweet for some but I enjoyed them. Smoky and sweet shredded pork topped with BBQ sauce and pineapple, HELLO INDULGENCE. However, on my second visit I ordered the Dirty Chicken tacos and I really can’t recommend them enough.

They’re gorgeously tasty, creamy, tangy, cheesy and even refreshing ALL AT ONCE! I don’t know how that’s possible, but it is at Luck & Lust.

A new feature to those who are fond of Famous and fancy something a little different is dessert! Now, apart from when the weekly special had vanilla ice-cream on the burger the closest thing I’ve come to a dessert in Famous is ordering another tequila Scramble cocktail.

However, dangerously, you can now choose between salted caramel chocolate brownie (baked with a freaking oreo in the middle!!!) or a pineapple and coconut cheesecake with strawberry sauce, lusty wafers and amazing blood orange jellies. Both come with a scoop of Penelope’s malted vanilla ice crea. Yummy! Could I pick a favourite? No. Basically, it will take several return visits in order to come to a conclusion.

I must confess that due to lack of funds and having done Dry January I haven’t yet ventured into Tom’s cocktail creations but the drinks menu is certainly one to widen the eyes and whet the appetite. Next time.

The main difference between Famous and Luck & Lust, because people will compare (rightly or wrongly), is the sheer volume of the menu on offer at the latter. The quality is there, the atmosphere is there and also, they have actual plates at Luck. Decadence, indeed.

Ale and Food Matching by BrewDog & The Deaf Institute

The Deaf Institute is offering up delicious food, expertly matched with BrewDog beer, with a six-course Ale and Food Matching extravaganza for just £20 on Thursday 23rd August!

As a beer (and food) lover, this is one of my favourite ways to try new flavours and pairings. In fact, I first realised that beer had the complexity and variety always attributed to wine, was at a Belgian beer and food tasting session at the Edinburgh Food Festival some years ago.

This is because beer can be brewed with a huge variety of ingredients such as chocolate, coffee, strawberries, coconut and herbs and spices – and this is exactly what Brewdog like to experiment with.

The beer can change the flavour of the food and complement it when consumed alongside it but also, with most of this menu, be included in the cooking process and enrich the food itself.

The Deaf Institute has long been a champion purveyor of good food, serving up quality food for cheap prices but also putting on Gourmet dining events each month and now they want to add beer to the mix!

BrewDog, the Scottish brewers, recently opened its very own bar in Manchester, have always been keen to promote the beer and food combo and now the two have a real treat in store for us.

Brewdog has a restaurant called Musa in Aberdeen which has been matching beer and food before matching beer and food was cool.

Josie, at BrewDog’s North West HQ, said: “Because beer has so many guises we feel it can offer even more of a flavour spectrum than wine! Each hop and malt base gives the beer a different character just as a grape would for wine.

“Our beer dinners in the North West have been really popular. I think people’s perception of beer has really changed in the past few years and matching food with beer is no longer an outlandish idea.”

The Deaf Institute chef, who designed the menu based around the beers, will be preparing the food and Brewdog will talk us through the flavour combinations of each course.

Ticket’s are priced at £20 a head and includes half pints of BrewDog’s draught with your food and also some rarities and special tasters for later in the evening.

To get your tastebuds tingling the menu is as follows:

Mini Yorkshire puddings with pork and sage chipolatas and tomato, apple and 5A.M.chutney. Matched with 5 A.M.

Punk IPA battered haddock goujons with homemade tartare sauce, Matched with Punk IPA

Mature cheddar cheese rarebit. Matched with Hardcore

Individual Lancashire cheese hot pots with homemade pickled Dogma cabbage. Matched with Dogma

Cheeses from near and far with assorted Alice Porter chutneys. Matched with Alice Porter.

Frosted chocolate brownie. Matched with Lost Dog.

Baked Salmon Fillets

Many people are scared of cooking fish, they always tell me that they don’t know what to do with it or they have tried it before and it falls to pieces and looks awful on the plate.

Serves Two

2 Salmon fillets

1 lemon

1 tbsp Olive Oil

2 cloves garlic

Pinch dried chillis

Salt and pepper

This recipe is fool-proof and will ensure you perfect salmon every time. First, preheat the oven to 190 degrees and put a small frying pan on a medium heat.

We’re going to fry off the lemon before wrapping it up with the fish, this takes the bitter edge off the lemon and the fish takes on the lemony flavour without the bitterness.

Just slice the lemon into thin rounds and fry for a minute or two on each side until it’s sealed, basically.

Now, get two pieces of tin foil, enough to wrap the salmon fillets individually and lay on a baking tray. Place the oil in the tin foil wraps and then coat the salmon in the oil and place skin side down.

Season with salt and pepper, and then add the dried chilli to give it some extra kick if you like.

Bash the garlic gloves but there’s no need to peel them, just squash them to release the flavour and put them on each of the fillets then add the lemon on top. You can use one or two slices of lemon depending on your taste.

Now, wrap the tin foil up, making sure there are no gaps; this allows the fish to steam as well as bake and reduce the cooking time slightly.

Place in the oven for around 15 minutes. Check them after 15 minutes and if they need another five then that’s fine. It’s better to check them regularly than to overcook the dish

While the fish is in the oven you can boil some broccoli, rice or noodles to go with it.

Noodles and broccoli tends to be my favourite and if you’re on an oriental style theme then you can always throw some soy sauce into the salmon mixture and perhaps some sesame seeds. If not, some couscous with parsley through it works well also.
